October Events at a Glance
CIRA@Vari Hall – Wed, Oct 16, 2013
At Vari Hall, YorkU’s centre, CIRA tabled to talk to students about Breast Cancer. Why Breast Cancer? It is one of the diseases that is recognized in October. During the tabling event, CIRA discussed many of the social media events and contests that will take place during the month.
Social Media is indeed a great tool for students as students are preparing and/or studying for exams. We wish them the best of luck!
In the pink picture on the left , CIRA was definitely thinking pink! Using our Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, we asked our social media friends to tell us what they think then they thought about Breast Cancer.
We posted quizzes and gave out prizes and even shared stories from our social media. Our #pinkswag campaign was definitely a success.
Breast Cancer Seminar by reThink Breast Cancer – Wed, Oct 23rd, 2013
We’d like to thank Shawna from reThink Breast Cancer who came at such a busy time to talk about how the organization came to be. Finally, also dymystifying all of the common myths about breast cancer.
Shawna also talked to the CIRA members about how students can spread the word and to better protect themselves against breast cancer with tools that we can all use.

CIRA Orientation Day – Mon, Oct 28th, 2013
CIRA held their first Orientation Meeting of the year? Why? We’ll tell you because it was definitely worth the wait. The agenda consisted of talking to students about how CIRA was created, and the primary goals of CIRA.
Next was a very interactive jeopardy style quiz where everyone was split into teams. The questions consisted of basic immunology questions, and CIRA based facts. This helped teach the students more about immunology and the executive team.
With the major updates on CIRA’s social media, the exec team showed off how to better use social media to better communicate with their exec team. We hope that all members learn to use YUConnect effectively!
Then, the big surprise. Due to the great amount of dedicated volunteers and friends on our social media pages, the exec exec team has launched two major programs to the organization. An internship program and a research program!!!
The internship program will give general members a chance to learn from their executive team and to take a more stronger leadership role CIRA’s activities. Members will have to apply for the position and will be treated an an executive member.
The research program will give students a head-start into the world of research as the exec team will host seminars about how to conduct research.
2014 will look very promising indeed!
Please check out November as we have a fashion show coming your way!
